The rule that shapes every Ghana quote
Ghana taxes imported used cars by age. Units under ten years old pay the standard duty stack. Units over ten years old pay an additional penalty that climbs with age, and the oldest units are effectively priced out. Dealers in Accra and Kumasi know this and shop in the 2016 to 2023 window.
That window is where China’s used market is deepest. A 2020 Corolla or a 2021 Elantra with 40,000 to 70,000 km is not a scarce object in Guangzhou. In Tema it is exactly what the market wants.
What we shortlist for Ghana
- Toyota: Corolla, Camry, RAV4, Land Cruiser Prado, 2018 to 2023
- Honda: Civic, Accord, CR-V
- Hyundai and Kia: Elantra, Sonata, Tucson, Sportage
- Pickups: Great Wall Wingle, Ford Ranger, for the work-truck buyer
- A first wave of Chinese-market hybrids for the taxi and ride-hailing fleets that are starting to ask about fuel cost
Left-hand drive throughout. Ghana drives on the right, so China-market units fit without conversion.
What we do not quote
Units over ten years old. The penalty duty eats the margin, and the buyer pays for a car that is priced like a newer one at the port. If a supplier offers a 2012 unit for Ghana at a “great price”, the price is not the problem. The duty is.
Three checks before quoting an Accra buyer
- Model year against the ten-year line. Confirm the year on the registration, not the listing.
- Landed, not EXW. Freight to Tema plus duty, VAT, NHIL and the ECOWAS levy. We give the freight component per port; the duty stack comes from your clearing agent.
- Inspection report with VIN. Ghana’s port inspection is thorough. A car that arrives with a report that matches the VIN clears faster than one that arrives with a story.
